I have 2 baby sulcata tortoise, yes they're separated. I feel bad because I've had them 7 weeks and they've only had around 7 hours of sunlight. I live in Los Angeles and it 80 degrees here everyday. When can I start taking them out so they can get sun? I wanna leave them for hours at a time. Can I leave them all day in a enclosure so they get sun ?

It will be closed enclosure, because even tho I live in LA, there is crows, hawks and falcons in my area. Wild birds that will love to taste these little guys. I also have a stupid rat in my garage I can't kill. I see him leave garage daily.

They can go outside during warmer weather, but keep it short while they are small. My general rule of thumb is an hour of sun time per inch of tortoise. Soak them after sunning time.

Here are some enclosure ideas:

Can’t or won’t kill ? You better kill those damn rats in your garage before they chew your car engine wires

They got my mom's Lincoln too. They also chewed through a wall into my reptile room and ate a hatchling radiata that I was babysitting at the time. That was when I cried...

That’s why when I do “catch and release “ , I make sure they are 100% toasted before “release “ .

I raised rats for food....for boas lol. But I actually rather enjoy them as pets. Now outdoors? Nope I have enclosed poisoned box traps and my cats cause my pitt has no prey drive. Both cats are great at handling that and only go out if I see one. Much like fetch they bring it right back.

And here I have them IN my house on purpose... : /
My daughter owns 6 and is babysitting 4 others. Yuk.
I've kept them as pets since I was a kid. My daughter has one as a pet right now too. They are terrific animals, but I can't have them running loose outside destroying everything.

I implore everyone not to use poison. The rats eat the poison and then walk around dying, where predators pick them up and eat them or feed them to their babies. Especially now in spring time. By using poisons you are literally killing the very same predators that keep the rats in check most of the time. Owls, hawks, canines, felines, snakes, etc…

I ask you to consider switching to traps of one sort or another.

@Tom they’re the black box ones with the hole. They go in are trapped and poisoned. We empty them weekly but there is no open poison or risk of them getting eaten after they eat the rat bait

What's the reason for poisoning them once they're trapped? Can't they be rehomed in the country?haha. I can't kill a plant let alone an animal...lol

Living in the city the rats are plentiful and very destructive. I've replaced an HVAC system, cable wiring, patio furniture countless times, and lost 2 sandboxes for the kiddos from the chewing through the cover. After spending a few grand a few times I got over killing them real quick, lol.

I've never heard of poison in a trap. Seems like if they are caught in a trap, no need to also poison them?

Learn something new every day.
