Orchard Grass

If your looking for fresh orchard grass in So Cal, I finally found a place in La Habra: Kruse Feed & Supply. The worker there said they get fresh bales every 2 weeks. The bale I got was nice and green, much nicer than the compressed bales I've gotten. It was 80-90 lbs, about $40, including wrapping it in 2 huge plastic bags so your car stays clean.

They also sell small pieces of a bale (pillows) if you don't need a full bale.

I wish I could find a source like this that sold much smaller amounts. I have a leopard tortoise and she eats orchard grass daily but only a handful. I only use a small part of it before replacing. The feed store I go to says to replace after 3mo. How long do you keep yours before replacing? Or how fast is it consumed?
How big is this pillow you mentioned? What I buy is probably the pillow you mentioned lol but we can’t even come close to finishing that in 3mo. I’ll check out this feed store you shared. The one I currently buy from is in San Dimas.

I pay I think $23 for a “pillow” idk how much it weighs but I can easily carry it with one hand. I think it’s ridiculous

I keep it wrapped up in the garage. The 50 lb compressed bale from Tractor Supply lasted over 2 months. It was about $25, but not as good quality as this one. Since it's so big I put out a big pile daily for my 2 sulcatas. Sometimes they eat it all, sometimes not. They also have grass and weeds to eat. The bale will probably last a couple months.

The pillow he showed me was a 4-6 inch section of the bale. I didn't ask how much for that.

In the 90s I would buy bales of alfalfa for $13 bucks. So yeah, it's way more now.

In Oregon $10 bale..a 3 string bale I don't know about weight

I think I would find someone with a horse or something else that eats orchard hay (rabbits?) and see if I could buy a flake or two from/with them...Team work is dream work!

Or get more tortoises like was already suggested. Lots more!

Hmmm a nice group of Burmese stars sound nice but not sure if they’d favor orchard grass as much as my leopard. And I’m still trying to wrap my mind around babies. That aspect isn’t appealing to me. Lol
