So i figured this would start a good discussion. I'm sure everyone on here has tortoises with colorful personalities, characteristics and habits. Care to tell us about your little guys or girls?
Well I've pretty much come to the conclusion that Tallula was an Interior Designer in her past life She loves to redecorate her enclosure, and I get a giggle out of it every time She just makes me laugh so much, its so good for the soul to have her at home. T is extremely friendly with people, she loves to sniff them and say hello. She loves to lie on my chest while I read in bed, and she snoozes there, legs all splayed, head out on my chest, SO CUTE !!!!!! She also really loves to bath, man oh man she throws a tantrum if I take her out too soon. I just love her to bits.
Cool thread by the way, I like to hear about everyone elses tort's personalities
Well what can I say about Dale? He hides a lot and when I say a lot I mean a lot! So I decided like Stace to bond with him the other night so I reclined in my chair and put him on my chest and he seemed to like it so the next night I did the same thing, but this night was different, Dale decided he wanted to pee so he did all over my chest. Oh well, haven't tried that again yet, but I'm sure I will because although he is quite the shy guy I love him to pieces he is soooo cute with his little red nose and he always loves to rub my nose with his nose (that seems to be our favorite game together). I do love to watch him try to get in his hide it's almost too small for him so when he goes into it he pushes and twists around like he's fighting with it. It's actually funny to watch. I also love to watch him eat he loves food especially Kiwi. I agree, cool thread.
Awwww Dale is just such a cutie Candy !!! Tallula peed on me as well, but she got used to it now and kinda relaxes with me or sleeps hehe. Sure he'll get used to it ! Don't give up, I love bonding with T like that. We also rub noses, every morning and night when I say goodnight hehehe. She's truly like our baby
What a good idea Ryan (you will have to talk about your tortoises too, we are so curious ).
Hermy is adorable and he is very sociable. His favorite thing in life is food, the more he is getting older, the more he is picky but he loves the food that he loves (per exemple, pear cactus, mazuri, radichio). Hermy is also very manipulative, when he does not see a piece of raddichio in his plate, he will not eat and will look at me. If I leave the room and come back 5 minutes later to see if he is eating, he will still be at the same place looking at me lol . Sometimes, when I come back 5 minutes later, I find his food everywhere and I find a Hermy mad at his mommy in his hide lol. The problem is, he know that he is going to win
Hermy has an amazing personality but it is so hard to describe with words.
Tank was an investigator in his former life - he trucks around his enclosure and the property as if he's seeing everything new for the first time. He checks something out for a long while, decides it isn't relative to his case and moves on. He also has no problem "throwing" Bump against a wall if he catches him trespassing - but what really gets me is when I catch him heading toward Bump and tell him "don't you do it" and he stops then turns to go the other way. He loves a butt rub and acts as if he understands me 87.5% of the time.
Bump is a sweetheart and like a little windup diabolical professor. He roams around inspecting (and tasting) everything: the deepest area of the bushes and grasses, dog poop (when we've missed one) and apparently every blade of grass or weed. Bump likes his head and legs rubbed and rests quietly on my lap - inspecting the material of whatever I'm wearing.
Ok, so my one russian Marty is just at breeding age. He has the will to mate just not the moves. He will mount the larger female from any angle; front, sides, whatever he feels like. The female couldnt be less interested. But little Marty will persist until he tires himself out. I wish they made instructional videos like the ones we see in middles school but for tortoises. Marty could really use them.
Ill keep adding more as we go.
Wow, I am glad to know I am not the only one rubbing noses with a reptile! Taco seems to like this and for me to pet her on the head and shell as well. Taco is still somewhat split in her personality, and spends most of her day snoozing under plants or behind trellises. I put food in front of her all the time no matter where she is, but she rarely shows any interest. When I take her to my neighbor's garden she will sometimes nom like crazy on the spotted spurge weeds; other times she walks right over them looking for a hide, and no matter how many times I put her square in front of her Taco treat she will ignore it.
Taco is usually very active in early afternoon, and that is when she'll be struck by the adventure bolt and take off for parts unknown. She will traverse the entire perimeter of our yard along the fence, stopping from time to time to inspect plants and small rocks. She will park herself next to the small opening underneath the fence that divides us from the neighbor's yard (well blocked with a brick as I do not want her to escape!) and look longingly through the crack for some time. I have seen her climb up, over and down a small tree stump, and up and over landscape borders as well.
Today I set up my lamp and stand. I don't have an MVB yet, but I put a fairly large floodlight bulb in it which significantly warmed her indoor house, and suddenly she was up and running! She went into her water bowl for the first time, and the second, and the third! She pooped four separate turds, which is great because I had suspected she might be constipated and had been giving her warm baths every night without the desired effect. She even tried to climb the walls of her little enclosure. I am very glad to see that something as simple as a heat source increases her energy level so much. Now, if I could just do something about her picky eating habits....
Nelson is big on sleeping but I think that's because he's so young (3 months). He wakes up in the morning for breakfast and crawls around his enclosure for a while- he especially likes to climb his half log. But he's usually asleep for the night by 3 in the afternoon.
His favorite place to sleep is under his pile of hay.
He's pretty social and very adventurous. When I take him outside he walks all over the place and nibbles on weeds. He will eat anything I put in front of him- he has never refused to eat any type of weed or lettuce. He really seems to love white clover though- leaves and flowers.
He's adorable and I love him to death!
