Someone gave me cuttings from this plant and they had no idea what it was. I looked on the internet and couldn't find anything similar. Does anyone recognize it?
Sorry, I've been at work and then I had to do my daily tortoise rounds. Yes, it does have a very white milky sap if I slice the stem. The leaves are very rubbery but are not thick like a succulent.
Yes, it's a Euphorbia. One of the most famously toxic ones; treat with great respect.
This was long-known as Synadenium grantii 'Rubra'; that is how you will find it in the literature. A few years back the whole genus was merged into Euphorbia, and because of a conflict, this is now E. bicompacta 'Rubra'.
I just looked that up. Definitely a euphorbia bicompacta, African milk bush. Oh well, I was hoping for a nice tortoise edible plant. It's still pretty and I'll still grow it though.
