What is happening with my red foot!!! It looks painful and serious, but the tortoise is walking around as if morning is wrong.

I came out to feed my tortoise and I'm seeing something most definitely out of the ordinary!! It's about 11 years old and we've never had any health issues. We've even gotten wellness checks at the vet. Please 🙏🏻 help me identify what's going on with my tortoise 🐢

Your tortoise has a prolapse. This can happen from straining to go to the bathroom or to lay eggs or even from a gut obstruction. Do not let the pink mucosal tissue dry out. That can cause sepsis which can be life threatening.

It should go down if you place a wet sugar compress on it for an hour or two, but your tortoise probably needs some veterinary attention to determine the cause of the prolapse and treat that so that this situation doesn't continue to happen.

Can you please provide details on the wet sugar compress or point me in the right direction? The vet is closed until 7am, 13 hours away.

It's a prolapse...first put him in warm to warmer water for a bit...push gently with your finger and see if possibly you can push it in...oh...put him in a hospital tank on paper towels. If you can't push it in...and no hard pushing!!! Pack Sugar all over it, that "might" help shrink it...after a while try gently pushing again...do not force, if it doesn't go don't force...this is a stop gap sorta thing...you need a vet but this is how to keep him until the Vet...probably before you go to bed rinse all the sugar off and see if you can't get it in ...put Vaseline over it when you're done to keep it moist until the Vet...DO NOT ALLOW IT TO DRY...

Thank you! Tried the warm water and sugar to no avail. We noticed blood when she was in the warm water. We have it wrapped up as instructed until the morning when I can get to the vet

By 'wrapped up' do you mean you have a sugar compress on it?
