My cherryhead is making a popping or smacking noise at night, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a res infection.

Every so often, and it is rare, I'll hear some sort of vocalization from my largest RF while I'm doing pen cleaning, etc. He runs up to me and tries to climb all over me. I've never actually been looking at him when he makes a noise. It is strange and not the clucking sound, either. As I've posted before, this tortoise also likes to pass gas near me. That noise I can identify! All of the above tell me "Get out!!" At least that's my take on it. I've seen them yawn at night. But because they live outside, I can't say if they make noises at night or not.

We hear this question a lot from RF tortoise-keepers...so I can only assume it is a normal occurrence.

Yes redfoots can vocalize. One of mine makes a noise sometime (always at night) that sounds kind of like a tree frog). It's really cute. Very normal occurrence for redfoots.
