Re: QUESTION

Fresh is always best.

But lettuce is far from the best choice let alone the only choice.

If you don't want to supplement with a commercial diet like Mazuri or Grassland you need to at least improve your tortoises fresh diet with lots of weeds and better greens.

Re: QUESTION

Using romaine and mustard greens as the only 2 foods is far from ideal.

The list of what I feed my tortoises is so long I can barely write it all out. Dozens of different things.

It would be in your tortoises best interest for you to offer a much larger variety of foods. An outdoor pen with weeds is a great place to start.

Do you have the ability to find safe (no chemicals or fertilizer) weeds such as plantain, dandelion, clover, ect? Can you either grow or find (once more "safe") things like mulberry tree leaves, grape vine leaves, cactus pads, hibiscus, Rose of Sharon/Althea bush, and yes the list does seem endless but these are a few examples. From the grocery store pick up different types of greens each time like turnip, collard, mustard, ect.., It doesn't have to be a variety each day. Just get one thing and feed it until it's gone then try something else the next time around. Your tortoise's current diet needs a lot more variety in it. :)

Write a list of all the treens that you can buy in the grocery stire and a list if all the gerrens you can get outside that are not treated with weedkilers or pesticides. Look them all up on the Tortoise Table Plant Database to find out what's good to feed. http://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/site/plant_database_14.asp

Every time you go shopping, buy something different to feed. That way your tort will get the variety he needs to be healthy.

Don't be surprised if he refuses to eat the new stuff at first. They can get hooked on a single foodstuff. Be strong and walk away and leave him to it. He will get hungry in a few days and eat what he is given and it won't harm him.
