I don't think romaine is very good as a sole item in a diet. But then, all torts need variety. I just noticed my hatchling sulcata is starting to munch on the grass planted in the enclosure which is very cool.
spring mix seems to be the best bet in the winter time. Mazuri can be very beneficial too. it is a commercial diet that a lot of people have had great success with.

His weight was 474grams. Danny, what is your opinion on the inj.? My bill says it is a vitamin A, D, and E inj. He has an appointment for his second one next week that I'm beginning to think I should just cancel. I guess I just wanted to do everything I could for him and since he was underweight, according to vet, it seemed logical he might be deficient in vitamins. I fed him one carrot yesterday and he loved it.

He's a he. Here is a thread on our forum that combines quite a few of the lists out there in Internet land, that will work well for your Greek. Oh and if you want to feed him grass, Mine won't eat it. You can buy grass at Petco or Petsmart. this is wheat grass and is organic. You just snip off the tops and sprinkle it over his food if you spray it it should stick to the larger greens.

My opinion is no more vitamin shots. :D Like Yvonne said it is way to easy to overdose with the vitamin shots. He (yes it's a he :D) really isn't under weight either. I get 512g for his size, so at 93% of that he is just fine.
You can go to the appointment to see how the antibiotics are working, but no more vitamin shots.
Like Robyn, my Greeks don't eat grass. You can try it though. Just try to give a good varied diet. Also that doesn't mean you need to vary the diet everyday. You can feed one different thing each day for a week and thats just fine. :D

thanks for all the help...I will cancel the shot for sure. As far as diet...before I was feeding him romaine lettuce, occasionally we would buy the spring mix bags but they seem to go bad pretty quick, with a little bell pepper everyday and sometimes tomato. If I go back to spring mix, no spinach, and vary that with other lettuces each week, is that good? can I still give him a little pepper each day? he loves it.
By the way, I really appreciate everyone's input, I feel a lot less like a terrible parent than I did when I got back from vet! I've learned a lot and know there is so much more wisdom to soak up before I'm a pro so be prepared! :p

Kriffin, sorry no one got back to your last questions sooner. Yes Spring mix is fine if it has spinach you can pick it out. Check the bag to see what types of lettuces are in it (most have tango and oak along with others). Radichio is good to feed him daily mine love it. You can also add things like Escarole, Curly Endive (sometimes called Chicory), Dandelion, Red and Green leaf lettuce, Romaine and mustard greens. Kale and Collard greens can be fed no more than once a week so if you decide on Kale and Collard greens I hope you like them too. You should only feed tomato about once a week at most. If you are going to give him bell pepper daily make it a small, small piece, sometimes they will be like kids and get stuborn if it is something they really like, they will only want to eat that.
Now I was also wondering how the vet appoinment went? Could we have an update please? :)

I'm sure that Melissa Kaplan is a good source of information, but the problem with taking care sheets off the internet is that sometimes they don't get updated as new research or information becomes available.

Please be reassured that Danny really knows his stuff. He raises many different kinds of tortoises and is very knowledgeable about their care.

Thanks for asking about him! He is doing great!!! We are in the last few days of his antibiotics. He did have intestinal worms, the vet gave him a med for it and I found six worms total! Each were a few inches long, I don't know how they all fit in his tiny little body! Poor little guy...he was one sick tortoise! But now...he is eating great and loving the sunny weather Colorado is having the last few days. He is also much more active! Loves being out of his cage and walking around. I'm very happy, he is doing so much better :)

Hey there Kriffin. I have a Greek tortoise too, a female Jordanian Greek, she's about a similar size to yours, and she's about 8yrs old, a definite sub-adult :D
So glad to hear Leon is doing so much better!!!!
