Years ago I worked pretty hard on checking out the Vets who make up that Vet list...now the list for Texas stopped in the "S" leaving half of Texas blank...I guess the list isn't used anymore and evidently is not maintained ...I'm embarrassed I recommended it to you

I think it is still a good starter point!

I would recommend Fortaz (ceftazidime) over Baytril (enrofloxacin) if at all possible. The dose is 20 mg per kg of weight and you only need to give it every other day.
I went to the vet. No exams were done. The doctor didn't bother to look close at my baby. She saw her in a basket though. She tried to sell me calcium and 3D vitamin. Then she gave to me medicine and the care sheets for Herman tortoise because it's the same care for all tortoises according to her.

Did you try to get the eye drops I recommended from any vet clinics?

Unfortunately, the injectable med you were given is Baytril, the one which I do not recommend because it usually causes the tortoise so much pain. If you are desperate, I guess you can try it, though.

I am surprised the vet did not give the tortoise the first dose while you were there, but it doesn't sound as though that happened. Or did it?

I asked the doctor for Fortaz but she said that they don't use it for reptiles (I doubt they know anything about reptiles anyway).
I've already waisted two syringes with Baytril because Pretty doesn't open her mouth.
I called several Vets and all of them honestly said they are not comfortable with tortoises.
I had a hope for the clinic I went to. But it was a huge disappointment.

Baytril oral or injection?

Baytril oral won’t cause any harm at all. All of the issues I have heard about (why zovick and others don’t like it) are related to injections.

Even so, I have used baytril injections on several species. While it is clearly painful for them, it absolutely is less risk than allowing an infection to go untreated.

It's oral. I can't make her open her mouth....

You are correct regarding the oral Baytril, but did you notice that the vet gave her the injectable Baytril and told her to give it by mouth? At least that's the way I am reading the label on the bag of syringes. I'm not sure how well that application would work.

Baytril comes in an oral solution, so I don't understand this vet's thought process in handing out the injectable form as an oral med (if any thought at all was given to this poor lady and her tortoise).

The main thought was given to me "Are you going to the bill right now, or do you need financing options ".
The doctor didn't care about my tortoise...

No I didn’t notice that. I can’t understand why the vet didn’t just give an injection at the visit and then have her come back in 48h for the next injection. That would be the normal bare minimum expectation I’d have expected from an exotic vet. Often just a single injection makes a difference.

My personal experience with vets has been more bad than good so maybe nothing should surprise me anymore. I’ve had to try to argue with office staff type people to try and get appointments, never successfully, and the common attitude is “it’s just a turtle” even if the words are never directly spoken.

They scheduled the next appointment in two weeks for the check up. No sense at all. To check up what? They didn't do anything during my visit. Pretty was in a basket covered with a towel the whole time there.

It’s actually insane to me they didn’t even examine him!! They could’ve saved a poorly tortoise going through a journey if that’s how they were going to handle things, they clearly have to clue and I’m really frustrated for you😣

Another vet visit today. The doctor was nice. She did the exam in front of me. It's the pinkish spot on Pretty's plastron and the doctor said it's bacterial infection. Pretty is getting the nebulization now followed by the Baytril injection.
I hope this helps your tortoise.
