Ok so as everyone knows I have been working on my NEW enclosure. I have a thread out here that I have been showing progress. So now I'm almost done with it and I need to get the inside done. So I need some grass that they can eat. So I was going to grow some grass myself BUT it isn't working so good. So now I went to Lowes and they have the roll out grass they sell. I was wondering if maybe this would work. I went there and they were sold out but should have some on Friday. Does any know if this kind of grass would work? I just wanted to double check to get some advice on this. I really need to find grass to finish off what I have in mind. Any thoughts?

It would work. However. Be sure it does not have the plastic mesh embedded in it. Some usually do. Also, have they used any type of fertilizer or pesticides on it? If so, if you can find out when it was last used on the grass. If its been 3 months or more it would be safe. Of it has been less then that, I would let it sit put for a few months and water it frequently to rid the grass/sod of it before using.

Ok so is there anywhere else I could maybe get grass that I know is safe?

Any rolled grass that I know of would have to be asked the specifics as stated above. It is safe, if doesn't have the plastic mesh and you can find out about the fertilizer and pesticides. I have no idea if they use this stuff on growing grass or not. Try asking. If they don't have the answeres, let the grass grow for a while without the tort on it and water alot to wash out anything they may have used on it. If you could purchase rolls right from a nursery, they would probably know more about their grass.

Sod is full of chemicals as well as the aforementioned plastic mesh. I would not use it either indoors or out. I've never seen it, but there may be some place that offers "organic" chemical and plastic free sod.

The sod would have to weather outside for one year, before I would put a tortoise on it.

I just leave mine dirt and then plant sections of it with whatever I want. I make 2x4 frames covered with wire mesh and put it over a properly prepared and seeded area to keep the birds and the torts off of it until I'm ready for them to eat it. Once its ready, I simply remove the cover and lunch is served. When they graze it down a bit, I can re-cover it and let it grow back some. Alternatively, you could grow things that will simply stick out the top and grow over the sides and then leave the cover in place and let the tortoises eat whatever hangs over.

YAY!!!! I found grass that has NO pesticides. I got it from a local nursery down the street from me. I didn't know they had grass because every time I went there I NEVER seen it because they have it in the back where customers don't go. Good thing I asked them today where I could get grass. I also asked about pesticides and they said they know for a fact there is NO pesticides because they get it every Saturday from the same supplier that they been getting it from for YEARS & YEARS. So this is great. I also bought some tortoise food but seeds from a lady that sells them and I started planting them a few days ago and they are already starting to sprout. YAY..... So within the next week I will have my enclosure ALL done for my cute little Cherry Heads... Can't wait :)

Yeah I thought cat grass would be ok for them to eat..... I just didn't know. Wanted to double check. :)
But yes I did get the grass I'm SUPER EXCITED. I will be starting to put my enclosure all together this weekend. I will post photos on my thread I started when I first started my enclosure. I have stained & glossed it with the sun, rain & moisture resistance. So yeah I'm going to have some fun with putting together. I can't wait till I'm done to show everyone how I made this enclosure. It is coming out SUPER CUTE :)
