Hi everyone,

Yesterday I noticed my Russian, Turquoise, had bubbles near his eye and checked again today and he had them once again - not many but a few. Was wondering what this could mean for his health and what measures might need to be taken? Or maybe I’m just overreacting (maybe the most likely scenario)?

Also quick question on his shell - I’ve noticed this and it’s been like this for a long time but seems rather dry? Not sure how big of an issue this is but picture is attached here.

Some background: I’ve only noticed it once before, last year’s summer when I took him outside from inside one day and thought it was due to the temperature and lighting change from inside to outside.

He’s currently in an 8x4 open top enclosure (made from PVC and wood) with cypress mulch, basking lamp, two UVB lamps (Arcadia 12 - I think, that run a few hours each day, prob will need replacing soon) and some tube-style T8-T12 fluorescent lamps which run all the time and are ambient. He’s got a water dish, a few live plants, and a couple hides. I just checked the temps and the cool side is about 75F, basking spot is about 94-100 F. Humidity is higher than it has been due to our wetter/warmer temps around here and I added some water to his enclosure to keep the substrate not dusty this past weekend. Humidity was about 50% but can range from around 27-60% usually.

I live in an apartment so he does not get out as much as I’d like, and it’s still pretty cold here but hoping I can get him outside soon!

He eats mostly grocery stock currently, being endive, escarole, spring mix, turnip greens, mustard greens, watercress. I did notice he chomped a bit out of a pothos plant I had in his enclosure yesterday, maybe like 1/2 of a leaf. I use TNT and calcium supp a couple times a week and also some days use fiber supplement by zoo med.

Anyways i very much appreciate it and thanks all in advance!!

First thing that comes to my mind about the eyes is irritation. What kind of bulb are you using for heat? What kind of substrate are you using?

As for the shell, how often do you soak him? Some extra virgin cold pressed coco nut oil might help on the shell. Haven't tried it myself, but it is often recommended on the forum to be used after a soak and then carefully buffed out.

Hi, so I just use an incandescent bulb for heat, I think it’s 100w but I’d have to check. the enclosure is about 24” tall so it’s a stronger bulb.

I’ve been soaking him several times a week (5-6x) for the last probably 5 years but before that and before I knew better, it was much less. I have heard about coconut oil but have not tried it!

What substrate do you have?

Little bubbles in the corner of the eyes such as what your tortoise has are not unusual, nor are they any problem. Many tortoises have them. They come and go at various times. I don't know why, though.
Alright, that is good news! Thanks so much for the info!

And right I hadn’t ever noticed anything like that before except those past couple times. I wonder what the explanation is or why it happens… but if it’s normal then I’m not worried! More curious.
