My girlfriend and I recently decided to purchase a baby Russian tortoise. We're probably just going to buy an enclosure. The pet store where we will get our little guy from sells aquarium type enclosures and those seem fine. However, while searching the web I found this neat little wooden enclosure. Are there any benefits/drawbacks to either of these? Which do you prefer and why?

I totally agree. I have a RT and he is very active. If your looking for an indoor enclosure I say go with Carolina Custom Cages. You can get it on amazon too. But if you do that you should also have an outdoor enclosure. You can buy tortoise houses but they are very expensive (its like a dog house for a tort). I suggest watching some YouTube videos on how to build a small dog house, and then add a ramp. You can also buy garden fences ( small fences ) for cheap at any hardware store or even Walmart. That way his/her own outdoor enclosure can be fenced in so they can't escape ( they should be supervised tho). Personally I like having both so that during the day my RT can be outside (supervised) and then at night / in winter he has a warm place to burrow.

A baby might be ok in that for a year or so, but as he matures he'll need much more room. A large plastic tub like the christmas tree storage bin by Iris would be better. You can have moist substrate in plastic, and that would ruin the wood.

Most of the care info you find is old, out-dated, and incorrect. Give this a read before you do anything: https://tortoiseforum.org/threads/the-best-way-to-raise-any-temperate-species-of-tortoise.183131/

I have a link that will help you with a closed chamber. It shows different ways to get one.
