Probably a stupid question but I was wondering if putting up a shade cloth over part of my outside tortoise run would cut back the UV rays much or at all. The tortoises get too warm and seek shade under plants and a fixed shade area now. I was thinking if the sun was less intense they would remain active longer possibly getting more UV in the process.

Yeah it's fine. They do however have different rating(percentage) clothes. Try greenhouse supply.com it think that's it. You can get 35-85% blockage of sun.

I use it to build shade huts, and I double it up too, so it provides even more protection. I use the 85% protection stuff

I love shade cloth. I use it on my Greenhouse in the summer, and parts of my box turtle enclosure during the heat of the day.
