I see. I guesstimate Irwins age because I inherited from my daughter who left for college.... She got him Sept 2014 and was told by pet store that he was 8 weeks. I got Irwin in June 2015 when my daighter brought him to me in a 10 gallon tank. I did research and found this awesome forum and I think I've done pretty good for him. I just love the lil guy!!!
I have had OLI for 5.5 years! And I've become SO attached to him, though I did not expect this: I am not an emotional person PLUS I'd NEVER had a pet/dealt with animals.

Oh - I've also discovered that he absolutely loves potato vine. I had plants some in one of my flower gardens and came out one day too empty vines. Little brat had eaten the leav s and left the stem and vines! Lol

Do you mean actual potatoes? As in, a member of the Solanum genus? Do not allow your tortoise to eat those - all parts are thought to be toxic. If you mean sweet potato, the leaves are edible, but very high in phosphorous, so they shouldn't be a staple (but are fine as the occasional snack).

There's an ornamental plant called 'potato vine.' I couldn't find any info on it because I don't know the scientific name and my search results kept coming back with potatos or sweet potatos. The potato vine has little blue flowers.

Ah...found it.

@TSchadel - If this is your plant:

Then only the berries it produces are toxic. (solanum crispum)

Yes - it's an annual plant that's called potato vine. It comes in dark purple or lime green. I have it in a chest I put in my backyard and I use it as border foliage. It does not flower. When it dies and you pull it up - there are actual potatoes that have grown. Irwin has just started eating it. If it's toxic - I will definitely pull it out of his reach!!!

Many websites suggest the leaves of Solanum crispum are toxic as well as the berries. I would not feel safe allowing a tortoise access to it.
