Shell Question and new substrate!

Here is a picture of Elliott in his new substrate, a mix of sphagnum peat moss and topsoil. He was a little unsure of it at first, but is now starting to dig in! However, after looking at so many posts I am a bit concerned about his growth ring in the back because it is kind of big. Does it look okay? Thanks!

That is a big growth ring. I don't know,though if its a sign of anything or not. Others, more experienced will be able to advise.

I have had Elliott for 14 years, I don't know when it appeared. He has been back with me for 6 months after spending a year and a half with my mom while I was away for school. He does go through stubborn "I'm not going to eat anything but lettuce periods", so it is possible that diet may be a factor (my mom feels bad and gives in).
