Hi,

After reading up and agreeing with the feedback I got about the tortoise I am picking up tomorrow. Well he is probably not in the best condition but we have decided to take him home anyhow.

That's not the reason for the post... I have seen these two advertised locally and they belong to someone who was dupped into thinking they where healthy two year olds.

Should I save them and how much effort would it take to get them looking and feeling heath again.

I feel so sad for them

Thank you for being considerate and saving these beautiful reptiles.

Everyone wants to grab every stray, injured, unhappy, and unhealthy animal that they can find. However, you have to keep in mind the housing details. Not just the cost, but the actual behaviors of the animals. Firstly, you should not mix species. I'm not sure if the ones you picked up are the same as the newly-advertised ones, but keep that in mind.

Please note that aggression and dominance will arise between these animals and you must be prepared to separate them. Who knows—you may end up realizing that every single tortoise needs its own enclosure.

I'm not sure how long it would take to rehabilitate the reptiles or how much it would cost, but you have to keep in mind that nurturing them back to health and re-homing them will repeat the cycle. It's not always guaranteed that the new owners will be knowledgeable and as caring as you. They may get sick again and suffer even worse or remain untreated.

I am confident that you have a passionate, yet realistic and intelligent, judgement. I wish you the best of luck in your choice and I hope that you keep us updated. I hope that I didn't come across as rude or mean—in all honesty, I hope that you DO take the little guys! Can we see more pictures? They're very cute :)

i would take them in man! just remember that all 3 of the torts will have to be housed separately! also make sure the new torts don't come in contact with your baby tort because of spreading of diseases can harm the torts.

Good point with the diseases affecting the baby tortoise; I missed that part.

It's such a hard decision and I must admit I have yet to even understand the logistics.

The point about spreading disease is a massive piece of advice I never even thought of.

I fully respect all the advise given :)

I probably won't live until that's age but it is a burden on my children that I probably need to consider.

If I was to be totally honest I was thinking back to health and then donate to capable owner

You have a good heart considering taking in 3 torts at once. First off if the younger one I just read the thread about was your first tortoise I'd suggest against it just out of sheer overwhealmingness if these 2 needed significant medical interventions. But at the same time you are here among people who will give you all the advice in the world. I guess your wife saying no made that decision a little easier.
One day I hope to either rehab a poorly Sulcata or rescue one from a rescue.

all i do is keep revisiting the advert hoping someone has took them on. They are still available though.

I understand my wife's view though , we have 3 children, 3 dogs and 1 little sulcata so its a busy household already.
