How do I get my tortoise to be not so skittish when trying to pet her? She is a free reign in our apartment.. she actually lives with 2 cats and they all sleep under her lights lol.. cats can touch her but we can’t

I've given my Sulcata tortoise some time like I would put him on my lap and wait for it to come out then I'd start rubbing the shell and soon I'd be rubbing he's head[emoji4]

Tortoises should not be allowed to roam freely or even supervised around your living area; especially not when there are other animals running about. Stories and videos of dogs, cats, and other animals killing tortoises and turtles are easily found online. Small tortoises become fearful of bigger animals and large tortoises become territorial smaller animals. All it takes is one defensive bite from a small, cornered, tortoise to end in tragedy.

Leave your tortoise alone in their enclosure. Keep it fed and hydrated. Eventually they will start warming to you as their primary food bringer. Any unnecessary contact only stresses them out more. If you can feel their hearts beating through their shell than you'll know that whatever you are doing is stressing them out. Don't be the predator. Be a responsible caregiver.

I approach Daisy from the front so she can see me, move slowly and scratch back of shell, she stretches her head out and lets me pet her head and neck gently. PLEASE keep your tortoise in an enclosure, that poop gets BIG and it is not getting enough humidity free roaming!

Greetings...

Two quick things i can tell you....your tort needs its own separate enclosure to feel safe and secure and needs to be kept away from your cats pawing. Your tort probably is very afraid, no warm dark hide to crawl in to, ppl and cats and things pawing at it or picking it up. If you create a safe secure area, it will feel it’s ok to come out and won’t be “skittish”.

Hope that helps! Happy Torting Along.
