what type of enclosure do you have him in? if it is a glass tank then the air flow through it isn't that good so what it might be is the moisture in the substrate evaporating from the heatlamp, that would explain the mist. For the smell it might just be the moist substrate that you are smelling.

Sounds about right. I have mine in a tank, and I can see condensation in the corners sometimes. There is a smell when the substrate is damp, although, not an unpleasent one.

my personal opinion is that if you can keep the enclousure warm using under heat say 70 75 then your bulbs don't have too work so hard,i keep my room at 80 all the time and adjust the temps in the enclousure as needed very easily,plus if my bulbs fail the temps still won't go below 80
