??? (spots on carapace)

My male Russian tortoise has strange spots on his carapace were the keratin layer was chipped off a little. Is this bad? Will it regrow? Is it painful? He doesn’t wince or anything when I touch it.

The keratin may possibly grow back over those spots, but it may not, either. If it does start to grow back, it will take quite a long time.

Spots like those are not painful to the tortoise.

Marginal scute R3 does look damaged/flaky if that is the place you are seeing.

just checked and it is just a lighter shade of yellow so it looked flaky on the picture
