What is the best thing to use? I had bark,( the small kind, like orchid bark) but I couldnt keep it damp enough. I picked up some other stuff today that is a mix of peat moss and fir. Its called a "jungle MIx"
First thing he did (bert is a red foot) is start to burrow in it. He seems to like it. However, it makes a mess! it gets all over his food. Is it safe if he ingests it? He has a tortoise table.so its open.

Well, that's the name of the game in tortoise-keeping. Who ever heard of a not messy tortoise? I hate it when they drag their substrate all over the place...especially into their food!!

If you've made your tort table big enough, you can set stones or tiles, etc around the feeding station and waterer so that they walk over the stones first and get rid of some of the substrate.

I am laughing at your reply! it is a mess! espically after he gets a shower! its all over his head and everywhere! but he seems happy about being able to dig now. So i guess well just stick with it for now and see how it works. I have to remind myself he is a tortoise and if in the wild he'd probably be trudgeing around in the mud anyway! thanks:):)
