My pride and joy is gone! My daughter and her friend left his gate open today! We have searched everywhere for the last 6 hour. I always thought it could never happen to me. I have been crying all nigh. We are in the country so there are a million places to look, my husband is even still out with his night vision heat seeking glasses (good up to 1,200 yards) and nothing. Please say a prayer for him tonight, he is about 13 pounds :( ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1433913791.342559.jpgImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1433913680.938362.jpg

The one escape that I went through ended when the escaped tortoise was caught trying to re-enter his pen...For food?
Keep the gate open. He knows where home is.
I wish you luck.

I am SO sorry to hear that. About six weeks ago Myrtle escaped as well and I know the feelings of panic and heartbreak. We live in a house without a fenced backyard and there are a MILLION vines, shrubs, trees, and bushes everywhere in our neighborhood. I was certain that there was no hope, but lo and behold after four or five weeks our neighbor found her crossing the road about a mile from our house in perfect health. THERE IS HOPE! I would recommend posting flyers around your neighborhood or at least on your street because that is why our neighbor knew she was my tortoise and didn't throw her into the pond like most people around here do when they see a tortoise ("turtle").
Praying for you and your tort xxx

Thanks for all the well wishes, I'm putting up flyers now, the worst part is we live in the country and there are so many acres between the houses! We have now had about 6 people searching for about 10 hours and still nothing but his pen is open just incase he comes back!

One thing that I tried with Myrtle is putting out a basking lamp in the very early morning (before the sun comes up). By the time I thought of it she was too far away to see it, but if your tort is hanging around close by he might come under it to get warm.

So sorry, don't give up hope. Many have been found even months and years later. Be sure to search at his level. Get on hands and knees and feel under bushes. Specially look at first sun rise when he will want to come out to bask. If he has a favorite food, put it out near the pen entrance but on the inside, with more further in. In the hottest part of the day, look in shaded areas. Inform all neighbors and alert animal control and vet clinics. Good luck, keep us updated.
