Thought I'd share a couple photos of the yards I pass by walking Dexter every morning. I am ever amazed by the landscaping genius of some of my neighbors.
I have spoken with each of them and found they have somehow achieved this "look" without the use of any chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
They don't seem to mind at all when I select a few particularly nice specimens of their botanical prowess for use in my tortoise keeping.

Where is that? It looks like san jose, CA hahaha becareful of picking certain weeds..I hear once you pick them it releases a chemical maybe and goes bad right away. I forgot where I've read that but IDK if dandelion is a culprit but just becareful and stick to grass and certain weeds that you might know of that won't do this...Better yet, take your tort with you on the walk and let him graze hahaha You can also make your own grass, I bought seeds from Carolinapetsupply.com and it's the tortoise seed mix and it sprouted 2 days later, very easy to grow! I just use a spray bottle to wet it at night and place it on the window seal every morning to get some sun and they have grown an inch in less than a week...can't wait to plant it in the enclosure.

I'm in San Diego.
I have never heard of weeds going bad. Regardless I give them weeds very fresh every morning. I also pull a couple nice one out by the root and keep them in water for their afternoon sunbathing enclosure. They always have fresh grass available.

Yeah..when I go to my secret dandelion spot...:D....I pick enough to fill a big soft sided ice chest smashed full...greens and juicy yellow flowers....and set the entire thing into the bottom shelf of the fridge and this lasts for two maybe three days feeding ....the CDTs are not happy with me if I try to sneak into the health food store and buy some organic ones...they TOTALLY know the difference....so if there is a concern the dandelion weeds are fine to pick today and still feed later...yes it is fine :D

I have considered that but then they wouldn't want to go home. They would just look up at me like SCREW YOU WERE STAYING HERE.

Plants may produce bitter chemicals after an animal has bitten a piece off, in order to deter further damage in the future. But that affects the rest of the plant that is still alive, not the leaf that was removed.

I give my Russians dandelion greens from the grocery store, and they are great. But it must be nice to have a patch of weeds like that nearby.

As for taking your tortoises to that patch, that would be fun, but I'm afraid they won't give you as a brisk a walk as your pooch. :)

OMG!! I LOVE the dandelion yard!

The irony of it is, from a landscaping and real estate value standpoint, that's the sort of thing you don't wanna do with your yard ... might even be illegal in some jurisdictions, unfortunately.

Of course, that's the problem with landscaping these days. Too many fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and equipment messing things up and draining people's money. I think more yards should look more like that.

It's pretty cool. If you look close at the first pic you will see Mallow, Sow's Thistle, Dandilion, Cat' Ear, Filaree, Medic and more that I haven't ID'd (I don't feed those). All in 20 sq Feet. One stop shopping at its best.

I read the text and was all prepared to see some fancy stuff. Ahh sarcasm...

I have a few spots like that too. Such good food for them and the price is sure right!

Love your dog!!!!!

Thanks he is my little buddy.
He is a Labrador trapped in the body of a Dachshund.
I do apologize for posting his pic here. He is not a tortoise. But in his defense he does enjoy eating quite a lot of grass.

Ur DaschLab is adorable! Even in Malaysia it's hard to find good quality weeds (we have just random lalang and other weeds that I think are not safe for torts to eat).

Nowadays I find myself scouting the neighbourhood during walks or when I'm driving around to spot something for my torts to eat. haha I would mind great neighbours like yours!

Luckily my property line borders a big native canyon. It is filled with literally tons of cactus and other goodies.
