Hello all! *waves* I'm enjoying researching our next potential pet, and looking for do's and don't's from real tortoise owners. I think I'm a bit in love with Horsfields, and am slowly feeling capable of owning one!

Didn't want to just lurk, so had to register and say hi! :) Be prepared for plenty of questions!

Good for you to research first, and welcome!

Key words: SPACE. CLIMB. BURROW. PERSONALITY. OUTDOORS*.

*at least part of the year.
** their indoor enclosure example is a good start, but most of us don't use sand. Also, one rubbermaid tote still seems a bit small for an adult RT.

Thanks for the warm welcome! Question one: what substrate is best for the little Russian dudes?

Welcome!
You can use coconut coir, eco earth, soil, or even a mixture of the coir and soil. These are good for burrowing, which is good for a russian.

Thankyou x also I'm confused over vitamin/calcium supplements, is this necessary every day? Even when there's a varied diet?
