Must stress do not over water, water sparingly, that is how they prosper.

Agreed with what has been said, as a matter of fact I would recommend NEVER watering it. If its out where it can get rain that'll be plenty. Also make sure there is pleanty of sun!

I have them in pots in my conservatory. I stand the pots in a bowl of water for an hour or so before letting the excess water drai away and returning the pot to its saucer. Only water again when the soil is completely dried out (pick up the pot and it will feel very light)

In our hot dry summers, I water my outdoor ones once or twice a week. I don't water at all over winter or when it rains. Most people have a tendency to water too often and too much, but they do need SOME water occasionally.

if you want more plants, Cut off one of the pads and cut in half, let the cut ends callous and dry out, then plant then in well drained soil and let them be.. soon you will have more plants!

Hi Tyler:

You might have trouble growing opuntia in Canada. They need full sun for a good part of the day. I'm sure yours will grow fine during the summer, but when you get your long, cold winters, cactus just don't do well in the house.

Did they tell you the species of Opuntia you bought? O. humafusa or O. polycantha are native to your area. Other types can be fragile (not winter hardy) in your area. Lotsa sun, well drained soil, and no overwatering are the keys.

They never told me but it's been cold for couple weeks here and it was outside. It has spikes all over and I think red flowers coming. I put it in his enclosure on a rock under the mvb if that will help. I put it high up sp he can get at it and get hurt
