Hello everyone, new guy here. I found what I believe is a desert tortoise in my yard yesterday. It is no bigger than 3" in shell length. How often do these little guys eat and would anyone know how old it possibly is? Thank you

Because of massive legal issues with this species, your best bet may be to call your state's wildlife office and ask their advice. Besides advising you about the legal ramifications, they can generally help with ID and lifestyle questions.

Yeah. That's a desert tortoise alright... They eat every day unless they are too cold. I would recommend soaking him daily, to make sure he stays hydrated until you work out what you are going to do with him. Use a tub of some sort, and warm shallow water. Soak for 20 minutes or so and make sure the water stays warm. If he poops or pees you can refresh the water as needed.
