My baby seems to like his neck to be petted, I start by rubbing his head and he will usually stretch his neck out (so I assume he wants me to pet his neck!) My husband insisted he didn't like it but I figure if he didn't like it he'd stick his head in his shell! I have also rubbed his shell bottom and top, he doesn't seem to care one way or the other. I have been able to rub under his chin a few times, but most of the time he sticks his head in his shell when I do it. I have also found he does better if I reach around and rub from the back of his head, if I put my hand straight towards his head from the front he gets startled and ducks inside and occasionally hisses at me.

Mine wont even touch his cuttle bone its been in her enclosure for a month now
Don't worry, mine loves to walk over his cuttlefish bone! He is a crazy boy. I think he may sneak nibbles from it when I'm not looking.
Yes, it was so sad. She was the pet of a pre-teen relative and every time we'd visit, our hearts would ache for her. She was in a fish-type aquarium on top of a tall desk. Her only heat source was a heating pad attached to the outside of the glass. The ENTIRE time we were there she would scratch on the walls of her aquarium. We lost sleep over it until my husband convinced the relatives to "let us take her off their hands" (wink, wink). It's not that they were intentionally neglectful; they just thought having a reptile would be as simple as having a dog or cat.

But now she lives like a princess—happily ever after!
I love these stories. I'm all about spoiling tortoises rotten! ;) My Russian was in a home with about 5 kids and other pets so he was apparently a bit neglected as well. I never visited so I can't say for sure, but he did come in to me in a small glass tank with the typical products the pet store tries to pawn off on amateur reptile keepers. He now has his own bedroom and a bigger tortoise table (which we already have more plans to expand) as well as an outdoor garden enclosure for browsing when it's sunny and warm. @madge1234 has the tortoise princess and I have the tortoise prince! Hehe!
