What size is your enclosure?

What are your four temps? Basking, warm side, cool side, and night?

What are you using for heating and lighting?

What substrate are you using?

Russian? Like in the avatar?

What sort of furniture is in the enclosure? Can you post a pic or two?

Often they will do this when they are uncomfortable in the space. It could be a temp problem or a space problem or even a boredom issue. These are active adventurous torts, that need exercise and stimulation in their enclosure. They also need to be able to regulate their own temperature by going into warmer or cooler areas. Check everything and come back and let us know what you found.

Hi Niki:

You've given your tortoise a taste of freedom by letting it outside occasionally. It wants to be outside all the time. And this really is the best option for the tortoise. They do much better outside.

Can the tortoise see out of the enclosure? If yes, try taping something up around the walls so she can't see out.

get it a friend!

Really? This is NOT good advice. Tortoises view other tortoises as competitors, interlopers or combatants, not "friends". Especially a russian.

Get a new enclosure that has walls so the tortoise isn't confused.

That's not necessary if the enclosure is an appropriate size. Taping paper around the bottom edge of the tank works just fine.

My russian tortoises are in solid wall enclosures. They try very persistently to climb the corners and walls, yet none can see out. Maybe they are thinking to themselves…never mind.
