Tortoise sleeping habits

Hi!

I have owned my tortoise for around 3 years, she is nearly 4 years old. My tortoise is still very small and spends a lot of time asleep.

I have not hibernated her this year. My question is when do they stop sleeping so much? Regardless of current time of year (I get she’d sleep more with the lower temps, it being darker and supposed to be hibernating). Also, when are they classed as adult?

A tortoise’s day is something like...

bask to warm up, eat, bask/snooze to digest food, go look for more food, bask/snooze to digest food... and repeat.

as the day goes on, the snoozing gets longer and the eating less.

Do double check the enclosure temperatures. It’s not uncommon for them to be affected by the change of seasons.

It must be 95-100F/35-37C directly under the basking lamp.

And it mustn’t drop below 18C/65F at night.

If your tort is getting too cold at night then it will take too long to warm up and get going next day. This isn’t hibernation, it’s inactivity caused by cold and it’s dangerous.

At this time of year you really need to make sure the lights are really bright as you need to kid your tort it is still summer.

thank you for the advice. As she is so small she lives in my room in her tortoise table - I will maybe crack the curtains more often.
