So I am looking for a life companion, who is small, pretty, slower so that he doesn't run away too quickly. I can offer it about 4 by 3 tub.

I'd like advice, help, anything to help me get a tortoise of my own, what to buy, and preferably what other threads I should read.

    Thanks!

We'll need a bit more info: where are you (the weather all over the USA is quite different depending upon where you are), what can you provide, what species (different species require different care/diet/environments), etc.

You can start by reading the stickies shown at the top of each species specific section.

I'm from Wisconsin, the Milwaukee region, I can provide with a "loan" from some people and then for my birthday get a big increase in my budget. I'd like a small species like the Russian tortoise.

You could perhaps get a Russian, Greek or Hermann tortoise, and build a second story for the tub. I don't have much space or money either, but there's always a way to squeeze it in there. If you get a hatchling, they will start off small, so you have some time before needing to expand. There are plenty of breeders out there, but take a look at the for sale or even adoption forums here.

Keep in mind, even small testudos like Russians require an enclosure of 8x4 feet.

Welcome! It’s so smart of you to start asking questions before you get the tortoise! Most of us got it the other way around.

As Techno said, you are going to need a larger enclosure. Russians are small but they walk many mile in the wild. They need the walking space for many reasons, a big one of which is that they need the movement to properly digest food.

Tort dude, I’m starting to think that you are a troll.
Russian tortoises roam miles in days, and need to be able to walk large distances to get their digestive systems going, like a horse. To keep them in a small area is not only cruel, but is detrimental to their health.
