Hello,

Can Tums ( the chewable antacid ) be used as a calcium supplement. The label reads 100% calcium carbonate. It has 1000mg of Calcium carbonate per tablet. Anyone use this. Also, has anyone tried placing a soluble form of CA carbonate like this in the water of your tort, seams like an easy way to do it.

Ca carbonate is the active ingredient. There are a dozen or so other ingredients that are in there and likely much more of them than calcium per tab.

1 gram isn't very much in comparison to the weight if tab, it would seem. I would have to grab some tums to check with my scale.

Better to get pure form or packaged supplement. No fillers or binders or dyes, etc.

I agree with Jd3. Don't risk it. Talk to your local pet store and see if they can order some for you in bulk. This is what I do and it brings the price down tremendously. I order a case of the largest tubs they have, and my guy gives it to me for just over cost.

If what you want is calcium carb, or any other pure form, buying in bulk from eBay or chemistry suppliers is super cheap. I'm not sure which is the best compound but am sure Someone can help with that.

I'm sure this can safely be done, but I'm afraid of getting something that was not intended for consumption that has some additive in it. Kind of like the pool grade diatomaceous earth vs. the food grade. Ya know? Makes me nervous. I'd rather pay a little more for the peace of mind. Just my preference, that's all.

I agree with Miller.. I've been using a butter knife to scrape cuttle bone dust onto my little dude's food.

Some use calcium carbonate powder from health food stores; cheaper than "reptile" branded supplements.

Equine powder works fine too. I use it for my dogs. Super safe and comes in various larges sizes in excellent prices. Much cheaper per lb than dog or human labeled.

i got a calcium and D3 supplement from walmart for $3, made by flukers. my Russian absolutely loves the stuff, i give it to him 2 and 3 times a week. they also make one with no D3 added. highly suggested.

My local ( non chain) pet store sells cuttlebone in bulk & gave me a deal on the broken pieces. I like to let my crew self regulate. Sometimes they gnaw a lot, sometimes not at all, but eventually it's all gone.
