I went to the fair and saw this turtle thing. One turtle was an African I didn't recognize the other. They had a 4 by 4 pen. Turtle pellets for food. Also no UVA/UVB lights. They looked horrible. Bot their shells were pyramiding so bad it was insane. Also their shells were really messed up. I don't understand how they can be kept like this. It was so sad.

That's horrible. I once went to a place where there were soft shell turtles for sale as food and these little turtles crammed into a little box with a little water for sale and these kids kept playing with them. I just hope that was only for a little while..):

This was a display for the fair. You don't know how they're really kept unless you follow the guy home and see the pens.

It's a traveling fair. They never go home. Plus the extreme warping of shells must mean the care taker isn't the best.

I have a few badly deformed tortoises that came to me that way. Without talking to the guy, you don't know if his care is bad or not. Its easy for us to sit here and bad mouth other keepers. Let's all try to keep an open mind. When you see something like that you need to go up to the keeper and talk to him before you jump to conclusions.

I completely agree.

I have taken on some tortoises which came to me in terrible shape.

Did you take time to talk with the person who had them?

So they were African what?

I'm not aware of "turtle" pyramiding. I'm sort of confused by this thread.

To date I have seen one Red ear slider with pyramiding, and some box turtles, it does happen just far more rare. It is easy to say so and so is a bad keeper, but they may have taken in them as they are and provided a home, I know lots of people here with pyramided tortoises, who they received like that.

We can guess how the turtles or tortoises were received all we like, but if they're being displayed at a fair in improper conditions, that's directly related to the person who currently owns them.

I'm not sure how this thread went from "I'm seeing "turtles" in a small pen with crap food and no UVB light" to "maybe the former owners are to blame".

Yeah. She said they were Galapagos turtles. Which they were not.

When someone makes ID mistakes such as these I'm fairly certain the animals aren't receiving the best of care. :(
