Unexpected new addition....

She did & was starting to loosen up. Now I have another issue though. I went to feed her last night. Apparently my kid opened the top to look & now shes loose in my basement area somewhere. Im going to put a heat lamp out everyday when I get home & maybe she'll come out before I go to bed. Its probably a lost cause though. Theres too many nooks where she could get in a wall or down to the sump pump at her size. Her cage with the lock is coming in tomorrow go figure...
Usually, they will hide somewhere dark and warm, very close to the enclosure she escaped from. They don't venture far right away, especially having been just fed, and just a baby. She is close by.
If you post a picture or two of the basement area showing the items/furniture around, we can probably figure out where she is if we are lucky! Been there, done that.

I don't know of one person who has had a snake that has not had this happen. The cage ALWAYS gets left open somehow or other. I'm glad you got her back safe and sound. I lost my favorite snake for 11 days two years ago. Someone left the cage door open.
I found her down near the bottom of my ranch, and call me anthropomorphic, but I swear she was as happy to see me as I was to see her.She was opposite of where I thought she was. I started looking around down there & theres mouse droppings in that bathroom (country living). I think she was after some dinner.Omg yayyy!! I’m SO glad she’s back! I hear that all the time, but I have had two of them, and I help care for several dozen adults when my friends go out of town, and I just don't see that. They are no worse than any other snake I have had in the last 38 years. They do eat more often, but they eat literally anything meaty. Strips of fish or jackrabbit, thawed roadkill snakes, any type of rodent, frog legs, chicks, quail, etc... They are very easy to feed and they ALWAYS want to eat. More than anything, they just behave differently than any other species or genus. They are not ambush predators like most snakes. They are hunters. They literally hunt and run down their prey. Their jaws don't flex like other species because they literally bite and overpower their prey and just swallow it. They don't constrict at all. Because of how they hunt, their eyesight is very good compared to other snake species, and I speculate that their brain power must be exponentially higher to be able to track, hunt, and run down prey, all the whole avoiding your own predators while out in the open, compared to other snakes that basically hide in the shadows and wait for prey to walk by.

They have two varieties available now. The all black is my favorite, and there is also a red throated type that is very popular. I would love to see pics and videos or your porch visitor. Its rare to see footage of wild ones. A friend sent me video of one in Florida once as it ran from her and her camera. I guess you already know that rattlesnakes are one of the Eastern Indigos favorite meals...
Indigos and cribos are in the same genus. It can be confusing. These are the six commonly available ones:
Eastern indigo: Drymarchon couperi
Blacktail cribo: Drymarchon melanurus melanurus
Unicolor cribo (my snake in the picture): Drymarchon melanurus unicolor
Mexican indigo: Drymarchon melanurus rubidus
Texas indigo: Drymarchon melanurus erebennus
Yellowtail cribo: Drymarchon corais
There are some color variants among these, but these are the coolest snakes in existence. I'm getting a Texas Indigo baby this year. They are hatching right now.
There is some easy-to-get permit needed to sell only the Eastern Indigo across state lines, but you can buy and possess them in your own state legally, if you can find a breeder, with no permit. I don't think you are allowed to keep them in their native states of GA, AL or FL, but I could be mistaken about that. Maybe there is a license you can get like the CA desert tortoise licenses we have here. They are perfectly legal in every other state. Because of this, many people choose to get the similar Mexican or Texas indigos and not mess with the Easterns. All of them are super cool, so you can't go wrong. There is a secret breeding facility under strict bio-security in the back area of a certain southern zoo where they are breeding them for re-introduction the their native wild areas. I was allowed to peer in the door from a distance but not allowed to enter. The re-introductions have been largely successful according to the paper the I read.
