I've got the credit card out. Screw it. Ive bought her a new table set up. She's coming to me today. I cant wait to slam the door in her face after telling her how disgusted I am. She already booked for a vet check up. I won't sleep knowing it's with that owner!
Sorry, I've already booked her vet checkup for Thursday

Now that's a rescue. Good for you. Just hold your temper until you have everything, specially the tortoise and then let her know how disgusting of an animal abuser she is and that she's lucky she isn't having authorities called on her.
First thing when you have it home is a good long warm soak.
Good luck.

Be cautious of the vet. There is not much they can really do. A good diet, room to work off the over weight correct uvb and calcium and he/she should do fine. The MBD will not go away and likely the shell deformities won't either.
I would never brumate this one.

There do appear to be only 4 nails on the front feet which indicates a Russian Tortoise, but on the other hand, the smal black spots which are visible on the original scutes plus all the new growth being white are more characteristic of Leopard Tortoises.

Ask her how she knows it's a Leopard Tortoise and ask her for pictures of it before or just after she bought it. Those pictures could be very helpful in this case.
Dont worry. Shes coming to me. Ive just bought her a tortoise table set up with my credit card. I cant sleep knowing this is the condition she's living in. I will rescue her! ❤ As soon as I have the tortoise in my hands, I will tell her what I truly want to say, then she's to get off my property before I report her, then the front door gets slammed in her face, but thrn il have to buy a new front door aswell 😉

Ok. First is a good look soak. Il feed her off some slate and try and get that beak down. Il give her a good selection of food to choose from. Get her temp and humidity perfect and she will need for nothing. I will put some vitamin powder on her food. Il bath her everyday for the time being ❤️

Omg that tortoise is in such rough shape! Poor thing😭possibly one of the worst Russians I’ve seen💔it takes a whole lot of neglect to mess a Russian tortoises shell up like that, unreal! I’m so glad you’re getting him!

Second the vet comment, more often than not a lot of them are following outdated care advice and there won’t be a whole lot they can do here, good housing, lighting, diet etc is going to be key.

Feel free to check out this housing thread, It covers correct equipment(uvb, heating bulbs, lighting etc) correct levels, sizing, appropriately maintaining the humidity, safe substrates, there’s lots of visual examples for everything and a really handy diet link to check out! I’m from the uk too so I think you’ll like it!

This includes lots of inspiration for an adult set up both indoors and out! The indoor bit has some good ideas to tackle indoor space whilst still providing the needed roaming room! Which will hopefully go a long way in helping this guy build strength

Lastly, this one here is probably most important, it’ll help you avoid the wrong bulbs, substrates, housing etc, I always encourage double checking purchases on the forum too before buying😊

Hope they come in handy! Thank you so much for rescuing him🐢💚

I wouldn't. Just remain your own sweet and sensible self. It does no good to berate her. Instead advise her to do some research before getting another tortoise, and leave her with the Forum's site info. Give her the benefit of the doubt. She was ignorant, not downright mean.

You’re a bigger person than me Yvonne! Lol but I do get where you’re coming from, probably genuine lack of education on his care rather than purposeful neglect, so sad either way for that little guy💔

Thank you for that. Don't worry she will get a good mouthful off me once I get hands on the tortoise! I've got my own 4 year old Horsefield, so I done good by him, so i won't let the group down. She's going straight into the bath for a warm so. I cant get her table until Thursday though, but i shall put her in a large storage box, with substrate and a house to sleep. Ive got spare table lighting equipment, so she will be fine. There's not even a waterbowl in her picture's! What the hell! Im just glad she picked me! ❤️

I will take your advice, your right. Really what's the point. I cant change anything with her, BUT, I can change the Tortoises life. I better change my will 😉

No! My sister and I have been involved in turtle and tortoise rescue in a very active sense for decades,...don't get in that woman's face...people retaliate and she could 'possibly" retaliate against you..
I am well experienced w/people like that and not afraid of them...take the tort and be done with her...you will be better off that way...people like her don't change so you could be putting your family or you in a bad situation that you don't want

@Yvonne G what do you think about the shell deformities?

cpl1307

I can tell you...you 'may' rescue this animal, but he will need expert care...the pyramiding will never go away, but you can make the new growth normal sorta...my main concern is MBD. It's a very serious thing and you may not be able to tell if there is MBD present because of your inexperience, no insult meant, If he does have MBD he will be in PAIN, maybe slides his feet w/out lifting, his shell feels softer and he might not grow normally...so you will need to decide if euthanization is better than him being in pain for the next 40 years. and please hang around ask questions of the experts and read what other have seen before you...welcome to TFO ....I'd put him on Mazuri tort food w/some grocery store greens or weeds if you have them...

Calcium is needed more than vitamins. A pinch of calcium 2-3 times a week. You can also do vitamins.
I agree with Yvonne and Maggie on not saying anything if she knows where you live. Otherwise I'd go for it. But I'm a revengeful person, lol. I don't forgive or forget lol

Dont worry, one of the other members said the same thing and really what is the point. Its not gonna change anything and the woman will know where I live and it puts the whole family at risk. Your right. It's really not worth it. I'm just going to get the tortoise and say thank you, I will take good care of her, then just bye. I promise I will ❤️

Yeah if she’s coming to your address this is definitely the best course of action❤️

It's wonderful that you have been able to rescue that poor little tortoise. I wish you the very best of luck, but seeing the pictures, I would not be surprised if he doesn't make it despite all your efforts. So please be prepared for anything, because it may just be too late for him to recover after having been in this terrible situation for too long. Again, Good Luck 🤞 🙂.
