Hi guys! I’ve had some lovely messages complimenting me on my care sheets I made for all the visuals they include! That makes me so happy because as a visual learner myself, that was my goal🥰

I’ve recently had some requests for some more visual inspiration for set ups that can house babies/ younger tortoises, so I’ve done my best to get some nice photos together, some of which are actually from you wonderful folks! I really hope you don’t mind if I’ve used your photo! There were too many to ask each one of you😣but if there’s an issue I’m more than happy to try and reach out to one of the mods about it, so please let me know!!

Some of these set ups, if made on a much larger scale, could work great for adults too(depending on species)

*disclaimer* some of these photos may include things in the enclosures that aren’t recommended, I’ve tried to comment on them where possible to avoid confusion, but there may be some missed.
These are more to serve as a visual aid, not as strict advice for how to set up.
Please also be aware that not all of them will have the correct heating/lighting in shot, again it’s up to the reader as the keeper to apply the correct lighting, heating, plants etc to your individual species.

To learn more about specifics on what not to add into set ups, please check out this thread:

To learn more on heating and lighting individual species, feel free to check out the care sheets I have pinned on my profile(click my photo, then click the username, scroll down to find the links)

All that aside, let’s get into it!😁

Babies and young growing torts need much higher humidity, it’s important to make the set up a ‘closed chamber’. These toppers are some examples on how to do that over what ever base you create.
Just be aware, the higher the covering/fame, the harder it can be keeping your heat&humidity at tortoise level, some use fans within the enclosure to combat this, however I wouldn’t personally use them for babies. Generally, the lower you can get the ceiling height the better, of course providing there’s ample room for recommended bulb distances.”

Absolutely loved this set up when I saw it! Would just have to be sure in between those panels is sealed well for a baby.

These work brilliantly! Be aware wooden vivariums might get moisture damage if not sealed correctly! But the smart enclosures look amazing and I’ve heard nothing but good things about them.
I guess one potential con for this kind of set up, is it can be pricey, especially for something they’ll grow out of, unless done on a huge scale.

Greenhouse style set ups can be both an efficient and a more cost effective way to set up a larger space that maintains that all important humidity.

With babies it’s about finding that balance of providing enough coverage so they feel secure, but not making things feel too cluttered.

I really hope those who asked like this thread! It’s not always the easiest finding good quality photo examples but I did my best🥰

Of course, please do feel free to add your own closed chamber photos/landscaping inspiration in general, I’d love that! They are so much fun to look through! I hope this was too❤️

Thank you so much :)) You must’ve put so much work into this, I appreciate it!! I’m definitely gonna be stealing some set up inspo 😆

Great work as always!

By the way, there seems to be moss in the glass jar on the one you commented: "I like the some of the landscaping ideas..."
Thank you!!😁

Very good catch! Your eyesight is better than mine!! I’m glad I put the disclaimer, there’s definitely some things in there that shouldn’t be, it can be so tricky finding the perfect photo references

I would eliminate the ones that have way to high of a top. That is much harder to keep heat and humidity down to the level of the tortoises. For adults, I use a ceiling fan on lowest speed in the winter shed, but I would not recommend a fan for babies.

Again it was so hard finding perfect photo examples of greenhouse set ups😣for the most part, the ones pictured had good floor environmental readings, but I do agree with you about the height and always try to warn about it, I should’ve stated so in the post so I’m glad you commented! Also agree with the fan.
So many people have great success with these though so I definitely wanted to include greenhouse set ups in this🐢💚

Oh I agree they are an inexpensive good way to go for closed chamber enclosures. I recommended and used them many years ago when I had babies. That's why I always have recommended them. It's the same with sheds, go with as low a ceiling as possible. It's harder getting the temp correct at tortoise level with too high a ceiling. Even with my shed, the ceiling is as low as I could go for my son to not have to bend over when he has to care for them. He has to be very careful to not get whacked with the ceiling fan, it's just above my head and I'm 5'5" my son over 6'. The lower the ceiling height the better, as long as you have enough height for lights and heat recommended distance.

Yeah absolutely agree! Ugh I wish there was a way I could add that into the original post! There’s always little bits I wish I could add in afterwards😂
lol I hope neither of you get tangled up in a ceiling fan one day! I have such long hair I’d be terrified haha

Those are amazing examples! Now I want to return my tote.. looking at this on Amazon. What do you think? How would I know if the frame is strong enough to support lights? Is there a thread on how to hang lights on those frames?

This looks good to me! I think the only potential issue depending on substrate depth, is the fact this one is 1.5 foot high, which is dot on 18inches, which might not give you enough wiggle room with your uv height, don’t suppose there’s a similar model with a 2foot height?
With the frame, if you feel its well made and secure(it’s best to eyeball in person I guess by giving it a little push, kind of get a feel for the weight it can take) to hang them you can wrap chain round with clip on ends to secure in place🙂you see in the picture below? Don’t ever leave it hanging by just the wire, this member needed more chain

Regarding the depth, is the idea that it's better to be able to add more substrate if needed if the lamp can't hang long enough? As far as UV, I planned to let him/her sun on my lanai for 2 hours a day (i live in SW Florida). So that means I don't necessarily need a UV, is that correct? But the same issue is a concern for the basking lamp I assume?

I see there are 4 lamps in the pic you show above.. is there a standard # of lamps per feet rule?

Ah perfect! No you won’t need indoor uv then😊
Yeah it is better to have some wiggle room and add more substrate instead of having no room to raise the bulb if needed, but I’m thinking you may well get away with this height as you don’t need uv.

No don’t worry, it’s just the amount this member needed to achieve her ground readings, though I believe it’s pretty standard for the sizing(which is similar in size to what you’re looking at) I think the finale order she had was, a ceramic, her basking and tube uv, an ambient led light in the middle, then another ceramic, this was for a young sulcata and achieved good readings from what I read🙂

If I want to do something like this, how much room would I need to allow to the top of the base to make sure my poor fella doesn't fall out? I think that's my final determining factor of whether or not I can pull off the 18". 1728952826061.png

Yeah that can be slightly tricky to gauge but I’d say you want at least a foot of depth in the base, if it comes to it, perhaps you could make your own base frame and buy the covering separately? I know listings do just the cover🙂

@mojois being awesome and mailing me his hides. I'm wondering how zi can do a ramp without totally copying? I'm even thinking of adding a guardrail on the ramp. If anyone has any clever ideas, please let me know. I'm now getting a redfoot and super excited about it!
