Painted turtle? She's got a pretty long tail, but the cloaca is up near the body. Female? Front claws are not long.

This is rescue #81. I normally don't take water turtles but the guy said he found it in the street and it's not a RES, so I relented, thinking I would probably be able to place it quickly. But when she got here I see she has an ear abscess, so she'll have to stay here until l lance it and it's all healed. Oh man. I haven't had a water turtle in the house for a VERY long time!!!!!

Awww She's Gorgeous... Welcome Back to Water World.. Ear Abscess???? Do you have to Lance it or can it be treated with Turtle Fix & Tea Tree oil and good old carrot soaks...
Smart alec! I lanced it, but it's not quite ready. I'll have to wait a couple weeks and try again.

@Yvonne G That is definitely a western painted turtle. Chrysemys picta belli

At that size it would have much longer front nails and tail if it were male. It has to be a female.
Thank you, Mark. I didn't know if the Western males had the long claws like the RES does.
