I live in the Austin area of Texas and was wondering what tortoise is best for this climate? I have never owned a tortoise before, but have been researching getting one. Hermann's? Greek? Redfoot? Also, do they do okay solo or do they need a friend?...if they do need a friend, is it better to get 2 females or 2 males?

Thanks!

Hello and welcome.

I think any of those three will do well for you in Austin.

Tortoises do best alone, but sometimes groups can work. Pairs are never a good idea.

I'm an advocate for Redfoot. And a few of our members do keep them in Texas with success.
Will you be able to house it outside? An adult RF will need at a minimum a space of 8x8'. And that would be small.
I'd also recommend just getting one at first. Redfoot often do O.K. in herds, but it wouldn't be a good thing for a beginner to try. Especially without the space.

I vote redfoot but hey I’m partial. Just do your research here and get everything set up BEFORE you bring anyone home!
