What tortoise is this?

can someone I'd this animal? I found it outside the house this morning. I assume it is a variety of tortoise, but I'm not a keeper of tortoise (lucky for tortoises, perhaps) so I don't know. I am in coastal So. CA and wonder if it's a native or an exotic pet someone in the neighborhood may have lost?

Definitely a box turtle. They aren't native to California so must be a lost pet. Try asking neighbors if they lost it.
