Turtle or Tortoise?

Someone found this wandering around a neighborhood. Is it a turtle or tortoise?

Not a very clear picture, but I'm leaning towards box turtle. Can we see the underneath portion?

That looks like a turtle, what kind I'm not sure. A terrestrial kind, I think? I will leave the rest to someone with more experience than me. Good luck! :D

It's a box turtle. Not sure what kind. However, if we can get its ID and if it's a native species, it needs to be left in the wild.

No, Barb. . . if in CAlifornia, like the OP, they're not indigenous here.

Yup. Box turtles range ends like new Mexico the furtherest West I believe and those are like desert ornates. Three toeds go as far as Texas . we have the western pond turtle and res lol

Looks like a Gulf Coast Box to me, but the neck markings are a bit different. Hard to be sure from just this picture.

Certainly not native to California.

I just figured seeing we have them, here in the cold states, everyone would have them.
