What you like about tortoises?

Hi everyone,

I'd like to start a thread about what made YOU interested in owning a tortoise in the first place and what made you like them more after owning them?

I'll start, I always wanted a tortoise because of their longevity and (mostly) calm demeanor. Now that I have an Indian star hatchling I am obsessed with watching them eat! The way they eat is just so satisfying to watch as they unhinge their jaws to bite into whatever greens they're eating at the moment. I also like it when they sometimes lie on all fours when they rest/sleep which I relate on a spiritual level after a long day at work. Love to see everyone share pics of their tort(s)!

Good idea for a thread WillB!

I like things that are not common, and I think that tortoises are not a common pet.
Also like their prehistoric look. Their behavior, their life cicle, their longevity, the way they reproduce, their carapace (forms, colors), what they signify in different cultures, and specially the face and comments of people when they see a huge one like Jacinta.

For me, it's the ease of care.
I live in a part of the world that pretty closely mimics the Redfoot tortoises natural home.
Giving my animals the best care and the best life I can is also very rewarding
