which do you feel is better, an open concept enclosure, or a heavily decorated one. Now I'm sure this depends on the species of tortoise, but just in general, do you prefer the bare minimum or pretty densely decorated

Hi Cody:

This is a two part question, in my opinion:

1. Which do you like better....

and 2. Which do you have for your tortoises...

I really like the planted habitats. And I always start out with well-planted habitats. Trouble is, the tortoises don't seem to like them to be well-planted and after a couple weeks the might just as well be plain with no plants, they're so messed up.

I will have to agree that it is better as a two part question. I get a big enough headache cleaning removing the coconut bark from my torts water and food dish daily, he loves to make mess in there!

I started off loving the more simple, plain enclosure. As time goes by I'm starting to like more decorated ones. I've planted various edibles in Emrys' enclosure for him to graze on, and it's good to see him actively using all his space.

I share Yvonne's opinion. I love the look of the well planted enclosures, but I have never been able to maintain that for very long. Anything I've ever tried to plant either dies from being inside or it gets trampled and eaten.

I prefer to see a well planted one.

Are my own indoor ones like that? Only a couple, because most of my tortoises are the type that trample things to death. I do well usually with keeping up on well planted hatchling enclosures, but that is it. Some of the adults have fake plantings, but rarely any more live plants except for what sprout up from seeds in their food. For me, I spend more of my time, energy and money on making the outside enclosures well planted and the best ones I can. :D
