HI, im looking for advice on what i did wrong. I just found my tortoise with his head fully inside his shell and all of his legs are limp even though last week he was still active. I started noticing some weird behaviour in the last 5 days because he was sleeping outside and for the time i've had him he used to always hide inside and i just shrugged it of because i thought he did it because he was bored inside. Yesterday i found him not moving and really weak so i soaked him in warm water until he started peeking out his shell, opening his mouth, and moving a little bit. After which i put him back in his hide with a soaked mazuri and a hibiscus leaf because it's already going dark outside. I was planning to take him to the vet today after i finished my errands for the day but when i got home he was already dead.

His diet consists of mostly hibiscus, mazuri, romaine lettuce, and papaya. As for the temperature it's near impossible for it to go outside of his comfort range because i live in jakarta and the climate is similiar to where he's native to. The first two months i got him i gave him daily soaks and after that around once every 2/3 days. As for what his enclosure looks like you can see it in my past post. I've had him for 4 months and the breeder said he was around 6 months old when i got him so he should be around 10 months old. Any answers would be appreciated though i wont be getting a new tortoise after this. Thanks

I'm sorry that your tortoise died. But given the information you've supplied. What killed him would just be a guess at best

I'm so sorry, for your loss, and at such a young age, 10 months is way too early to pass.
As what ZEROPILOT had said, it would be hard to make a determination as to the cause of death. Of course if you had a Tort Specialist in the area, you could always have a necropsy preformed, that might give you some clues . .

That's very sad, and I am sorry your redfoot died.

Also, sometimes when their pets die, people tend to blame themselves and feel guilty even though it may have had nothing to do with anything they did or did not do, but something totally unknown and impossible to find out. So, if you feel that way now, so you said you are not getting another tortoise, just give yourself some time - you may in the future want to try again! All the best anyway.

I'm so very sorry - unfortunately, even very young tortoises can have medical problems, and haven't got the strength to fight them off. Please don't give up on getting another one, but if you do, be very careful to disinfect anything that has been used for this poor little chap. And I hope you will think about getting another one eventually - we have had our Hermanns tortoise since he was a baby, and he is 22 now - he is a constant joy and entertainment to us - the best thing ever to have happened.
Best wishes
Angie
