Hi, turtle folks.
i got some beautiful Mopani wood to add to my aquarium. I soaked and drained it/soaked and drained etc for over a MONTH and thought the soak water finally looked clear. After the wood was in my (uninhabited as of yet) aquarium for a week, the water turned yellow- like someone had peed in it. :( Now, if my goofy brother-in-law was around, I would have good reason to suspect that as the cause, but he is about a thousand miles away. So it can only be tannins- STILL. :(
Does anyone know if filters remove tannins?
Thanks! :p

I've had good luck boiling wood to remove tannins, but given their nature, I would anticipate that they would bind effectively in an activated carbon bed. Be sure to watch the pH as you may need to buffer in order to counter the acidity.

Carbon will only do so much to remove them. It won't remove all of the tannins though.

BUT, I would leave the water nice and stained, particularly for a little mud turtle. That is the type of water they are used to living in: tannin rich. Those tannins will help keep potential fungus issues away, and also often help the health of juveniles.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Yes, it can look a little disconcerting since the water is yellowed, but it is actually not doing any harm.

A lot of fish hobbyists want that look for their Central/South American fish tanks.
I'd pop in to a site like MONSTER FISH KEEPERS and ask. they also have a section for members with turtles. It's a site about keeping big aquatic pets.
From what I've seen, there is a product called PURIGEN that has been used with great results and it is renewable.

it took almost one year for my drift wood . i'd just boil it couple time then leave it alone soaked for couple weeks.
