Window well cover

So I'm planning my outdoor enclosure and realized I could make it a bit bigger if I can find a good way to cover the window well. I would like the cover to be such that the well would still allow both egress and ventilation. So I'm thinking using a mesh over the window (maybe even something like hardware cloth). Would a Russian tortoise be able to deal with a mesh cover (like this one)? Or would this create a hazard?

As long as the tort can't get thru it and fall in the window well it should be fine.
