Cali out door enclosure

I was wondering if I wanted to set up an outdoor tortoise habitat what things do I need for the enclosure and it's in California

What species?
What size and age?
Where are you in CA? Different advice for someone in the S.F. Bay area vs. Palm Springs...

They need shade, cooler areas for the heat of mid summer days, underground burrows are great for summer time. They need a shallow water source sunk into the ground, regular soaks help... Plants and trees are always nice.

Most of all, lots and lots of space.

Russian, hermman's, greek or marginated will fit your bill nicely.

Would I need to put them in during winter or need some type of heat source in their hide?
