Because they aren't a friend of variety in their food ( they only really like mushrooms and sweet things) I use this solution. I cut 7 different things which they normally never will touch in really small pieces. On this way they actually only want to pick out mushrooms but they eat the other stuff with and they don't know it ( I hope :D) really effective method. Maybe interesting for somebody who has also problem with the diet of his/her turtle

Very nice photos julian.
I have the same problem with the homes hingebacks, they eat mushrooms, fruit and worms/slugs and snails. Very very occasionally they grass, dandilions and rocket.(adults only)
I have these in 3 groups now. Adults and 2 groups of juveniles/hatchlings.
The other day a mashed up a banana with a mix of weeds, they flat turned it down. All 3 groups.
I don't consider it a problem anymore, it must be natural.

Yes for sure its normally not a problem but for example the mushrooms which you can buy here aren't familiar with those they find in the natural. So the mushrooms don't have enough vitamins calcium etc here. So for me it is important they get enough vitamins for growing and stay vital. And on this way they eat thing which have them. But homena is other. They get their vitamins from the fruits... But fruits aren't the perfect food for lobatsiana..
But good that you separate them. It will by the growing process and eating!

Do the lobatsians eat worms, slugs and snails?
If you put mushrooms in sun for 30 minutes before you feed it increases Vit D content.

They eat them to 50% let me say it on this way :D I can only notice that the female eat those stuff. The male doesn't touch it. Same with K.spekii only female eat that. The males don't touch it. I spoke with a guy from the north of Germany about it and he can see the same behavior.

Oh really that is something I didn't know! You can learn all the time something new.

It's only what I've tried to research about d3 an d2 in food and plants. On more than one resource I read that mushrooms absorb vitamin D the same way our human skin does. 30 to 60 mins in sunlight increases the content.
I got worried at one point about phosphorus to calcium ratio in snails. Think its about 1:10 ratio. However I've had over 30 eggs this year, all perfectly formed. I also offer cuttlebone which they eat from time to time. Usually the females. Yesterday one of the females ate a lot of cuttlebone, I think she will lay within the next 6 wks again.

That would be awesome. I offer all tortoises sepia. I also use this ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1471353527.572127.jpg
Which I mix under the food. Calcium is one of the important minerals for tortoise!

Sepia:confused:. Is this the ink they shoot for defence?

No it's also calcium but in one piece. This piece is the whole time in the enclosure so that they have all the time the possibility to take calcium

I had not noticed this with the hinge-backs. My male Pyxis planicauda have no hesitation to eat mushrooms.

I think he means cuttlefish bone.
Sepia is the Genus of the common cuttlefish as well as being the colour, originally so called as it was derived from the ink they produce when threatened.

Interesting... I only notice it with spekii and lobatsiana not with nougeiy, Erosa and homeana. Did you try it with spekii?
