Unless it's grass, or a dandelion I am totally lost. I took Sheldon outside today to get some sun and graze. Took a couple pics of some different stuff out there in the yard and just wanted to know if anyone can let me know what they are and if they are safe. I believe the first ones just clover... I think.

Hi Jay.

I think #1 is clover. If its oxalis, you will know when it flowers.
#2 is mint. Most won't eat it, but I don't think its toxic.
#3 is clover.
#4 is a dandelion family member and is safe.
I think 5 is plantain, which would be good. Excellent tortoise food.
#6 I can't remember the name, but it grows in my tortoise seed mixes, so I think its okay, but not a tortoise favorite.

Hi Tom,

Thank you for the identification, that helps out a lot. The yard was full of that plantain stuff, which I know now is it good thing.

Vlad loves the broadleaf plantains we have here. They're just starting to sprout so they're not full size yet, but he grabs the tiny leaves and eats them down to the dirt [emoji16]

MI strongly believe the first is clover but need to see the stems. Oxalis has purple stems with underground runners, at least mine does.

The last one looks like yarrow to me and turned into a summer favorite of my Russian last year. She has two patches she grazes from letting others alone. It’s a nice outdoor plant in a large enclosure as it can take some trampling. We say they are grazers all the time but has been interesting watching her transition to an animal that prefers searching out and nipping her own food over what I hand out. Presumably she is transitioning “back” since she is wild caught. A far cry from when she first came to us.

@Tom I think you are right on the dandelion relative but I’d like to see that plant when it gets a bit bigger to be sure.

As I come across more plants that I am unsure of, I'll keep attaching them to my original post so I have it to use as a quick reference. I was wondering what these two different plants are.20180505_160925.jpg20180505_161152.jpg

It’s not the best picture but I think the first is a grape hyacinth. Not recommended due to irritants in the bulbs. One I wouldn’t feed and I’ll feed most anything.

The second is a deadnettle or henbit, which is a close relative. Dead nettles are fine; opinions on henbit vary but at worst say feed sparingly.

Thankyou so much, the sun was glaring on my screen so bad, I had a hard time taking a clear picture. Thank you for the ID. It's amazing how many different weeds there are now that I'm actually looking for them. Thanks again.

No worries. You’d have to just about lie on the ground to get a good picture of the first one when it’s in the grass like that. They are very short!

More pics of weeds I came across today. Not sure what they are. The last pic has two different ones. Thank you in advance.20180513_140355.jpg20180513_140239.jpg20180513_135353.jpg20180513_135813.jpg20180513_140014.jpg

AF69577F-64AE-4741-8E53-BD49DC6B2D47.jpeg The one with the purple flowers does it look like this? If so it could be creeping Charlie and is a no go. I haven’t fed it though it grows everywhere here because I’m not sure which it is. Just a heads up I may be wrong.

Me too so I’m probably wrong but since both grow in our area I stay away from both cause henbit is only ok here and there as it is and creeping Charlie is a hard no bueno. I figure why bother.

Whoa, too many pictures Jay! Has someone been mowing in this area? Everything is cut off.

I don’t know exactly what the first one is but it’s a chicory, safe.

The second one looks like parsley to me. It’s probably something else but parsley has seeded itself many times in my yard, from seeds blown out of the herb box. You can taste it to see.

The third I have no idea.

Pretty sure you’ve got some strawberry in the fourth. Wild maybe?

No clue on the fifth.

And no idea on the one with the flower.

Lol, I went to a friend's yard today and there were so many different weeds I got a little picture happy. He had mowed it 2 days ago. I was wondering if the third one maybe some kind of plantain? There were huge patches of it all over

I’m really not good with plantain but I don’t think so.

Five might be a narrow leaf or other plantain but again, I don’t see much of any kind here; we don’t have many watered lawns.
