It's one week until we get Mikey and I feel some what prepared. He has a very large enclosure indoors which has an open top. the substrate is staying damp/ most except for the top layer, I'm assuming because of his heat lamp (which I have been running as if was in the enclosure to test temp and humidity levels) . Is buying a sprayer to keep the top layer damp a viable solution?

Its gonna be impossible to keep humidity up with an open top... wish it was though, it would make enclosure building so much easier lol

the sides are about 14"
Yeah a little bit low to allow you to hang the light inside. You could always frame out a screen top and cover with heavy duty tin foil and just cut out spots for the lighting

I've tried all manner of keeping open tops. It just doesn't work.

Also, those clamps on the light fixtures always fail. Best case is broken glass and a live socket in your tortoises enclosure. Worse case is your whole house burns down. Hang your fixtures from over head instead.

What species of tortoise are you getting? What size and age?

unfortunately im going to have to find a way to make it work, too much time and money put in to start over. Everyone has a different suggestion on what to do when starting so I tried to pick what best worked for us. we are getting a Russian because they are small and can stay indoors and it's probably going to be a baby
