Hello,

Can anyone recommend a reliable min max thermometer that I can use in my garage while my tortoise hibernate? This is his first year and I'm worried about the temperature in there! I have an exo terra min max one at the moment but I'm getting some odd readings from it! For example its 2.8 degrees at the moment and its saying that the min temp is 16.4!?

Please help!

Thank you

Kim

I buy mine at a local hardware store. I get two different types from different makers and watch both to make sure one isn't malfunctioning.

Thank you Tom! I'm getting worried about the low temps and want to keep a good eye on them! It was apparently minus 2 outside last night!

IF you really want to track what temperatures are doing, it is useful to use one that logs data you can look at to see what the temperatures have been over time. They download data to an app on your smartphone and display in a graph. YOu can display as hourly, daily, monthly etc.

The least expensive adequate one I have found is an Inkbird. It also has a remote probe that can be place inside an aquarium or buried in a nest and still have the unit where there is good bluetooth reception. The app downloads when you open the app and are in bluetooth range. Seems to work very well for about a year or so, then I get some that stop downloading data. But well worth the information and detail.

My favorite is the SensorPush. This is more expensive at $50 ea but more reliable. I have over 20 of them in all my egg clutches and enclosures and night boxes. It does standardly download by bluetooth when in range, BUT... You can add a wifi gateway and then all the data is available from anywhere in the world. On vacation, you can check temperatures! The data reporting is much more robust and modifiable. I've had several running over 4 years now.

Thankyou so much Mark, I'll have a look into that as it sounds perfect! I'm really worried about putting him in the garage, do you think it will be too cold! The temp in there is pretty much the same as outside according to my thermometer!

It does sound colder than I would want for a tortoise in brumation. I don't know what species you are talking about, but most species that do brumate come from various areas of the world that all have ground temps in the winter where they brumate that seem to stay above the 8° - 10° range. Ground temps at burrowing depth colder than that would be areas with no tortoise populations. I would think a min of 8° would be desireable.

He's a horsefield and I've been told between 5 and 7 degrees but I feel like the temp in my garage is fluctuating too much so I might have to rethink! I wish I had a fridge but cant afford one this year!

I have also using Sensor Push for a couple of years now and like you have them all over. They monitor both Temps and Humidity very well.
