Leaving My Tort Alone.

I am planning to travel to Aqaba (in the south of Jordan) for a few days. The place is extremely far from Amman: it is about 400 km away! Therefore I cannot go and come back in one day.

The trouble is that I would have to leave Oli alone. He refuses to eat unless I hand feed him. Moreover, the flat would become a "freezer" which is worrying for a cold blooded animal. I cannot leave his lamp on for safety reasons, and the same applies to kerosene (or gas) heaters.

Animals/pets are not allowed on public transportation here. This makes things even harder. I would have taken him along and I am sure that he would have enjoyed the very warm weather, in Aqaba.

As for asking someone to take care of him, I would never do that. With all my respect for everyone, people in this part of the world consider tortoises toys for children!

Anyone's help, suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Since you are only popping down for “a few days”, i would set all your lights on timers, give your tort a nice soak before you leave, provide some food, and go alone. When you return a quick soak & feed like u normally do. A few days of no food will be fine.

Enjoy Aqaba. I was there a few years ago, lots to see.

@SPILL , @Maro2Bear , I am watching the news and, guess what? Fire at a school in the northern part of the country. Something to do with electricity. See why I do not "trust" it? so as to say.

Regardless of country - i personally wouldn't let any electric heater remain plugged in while i was away. Space heaters are notorious for having issues.

Unfortunately even that I cannot leave on, and leave. Electricity here is anything but safe, here. Therefore, if I were to do something of the sort, I would remain worried instead of enjoying myself. Know what I mean?

Thanks your advice, anyway.
I know exactly what you mean, it crosses my mind frequently while at work. I hope you find something that works out and you are able to enjoy your trip.

IN the US we have come to accept reliable electricity as the norm and become outrage when it fluctuates. My heart goes out to you!. Maybe you could line the outside enclosure with jugs of hot water then wrap tighly with plastic and a blanket to maintain some warmth with the added mass.

I use an electric oil heater for my tort.It sets by the enclosure in the room she's in.Works really good. Not hard to find and are very reasonably priced. They are enclosed like an old room radiator that you can set the temp yourself and are very safe and reliable.Just don't put anything up against it and it will do fine. I use 2 of this in my garage during the winter for 3 of my cats and on 23 degree days they are a toasty 46 degrees,at least.

Well, Gillian, you will definitely have to abort your plans and stay with your poor little tortoise.
Either that, or just make him as safe and warm as you possibly can without electricity and go have a ball!

Do you have a friend or a neighbor you trust to come visit your tort while youre away??

The people I know either live far or work or both!
As far as neighbours are concerned, relationships these days are not they were in the 60s and 70s any more. They just say "Good morning/evening" to one another.

Thanks the suggestion, anyway.
