Im incredibly new to the whole tortoise scene, and I was thinking about getting a russian tortoise to start. I was just wondering what are the chances of a female getting pregnant without a mate and whether I should get a male or a female? Thank you :)

A female can not have babies/fertile eggs without ever being with a male. However they can still lay eggs.
If it's ever been with a Male, it's possible to have fertile eggs as some tortoises can hold sperm for some years.
I would suggest getting a Male as a female will need proper nesting spot to lay those infertile eggs if she does lay any or could become egg bound.

And this is a bit embarrasing to ask but, the males have there "man parts," but do they ever...uh...pop out? I dont really want to see a turtle trying to do it with anything

Yes they do pop out. However, usually you only see it when they are around 2-3 years old and they are discovering their manhood and are relaxed in a warm water soak. This is the only time I actually seen my leopards. He did this for about a month or so and then I haven't seen it since and he has even bred a female a few times.i never have seen my Russians male parts.

Good luck-boy torts are very proud of themselves and will mount rocks to boots. They flash a lot. I too am hoping for a girl they are so much more well behaved
